PETER: Yes, you are! Olaya is here as well, and is about to tell us who we’re talking with in this episode.

OLAYA: So the badass guest we have in this episode is my dear friend, Upasana Roy who’s currently a postdoc at Columbia University. We worked together during our time at the postdoc society there. And I just cannot wait for all of you to hear the amazing things she has to say. But first of all, let’s have her introduce herself.

UPASANA: Well, I’m Upasana Roy. I’m a postdoc at Columbia University in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics. My pronouns are she/her, I’m originally from India and I came to the United States in 2012 to do my PhD at Stony Brook in the department of Chemistry.

PETER: I am so excited for everyone to hear this conversation with Upasana. It was truly a fantastic conversation with her. Please remember that this conversation was recorded in the fall, late 2021. Should you hear some dates and think, wait, Nope. Nope. Not adding up. That’s because they won’t. But Upasana is fabulous and we are so happy we get to speak with her in this episode. Enjoy!

PETER: Well, welcome to our show. We are so thrilled that you’re taking time out of your busy postdoc life.

OLAYA: Yeah. Thank you, Upasana. It’s always good to hear that a postdoc is not working on a weekend.

UPASANA: <laugh> Yeah, no, thank you guys for inviting me and for putting this together. I think it’s really awesome.

PETER: Well, we are happy to have you, I will say I have never understood chemistry, so I’m hoping through this conversation that will kinda osmosis through the microphone and into my brain. So just know that you have that burden on you now.

UPASANA: Don’t wanna get your hopes up, but…

PETER: Oh, they are high right now.

OLAYA: So without getting too much into chemistry. How would you define the postdoc position? Like, what is it to you?

UPASANA: To me, a postdoc is all about kind of being an independent researcher. I guess I think of PhD as a time where, you know, your research is being guided by a lot by a PI, you have a thesis committee, you have people who kind of helping you learn, shaping your research. But to me, I think of postdoc as like, you’re really in the driver’s seat, you are leading the project forward, thinking of questions and you’re kind of independent in a way. So that’s, to me the basic fundamental way I think of a postdoc, but it’s also really, an important time and an opportunity to, you know, do other things like mentor people, you get a lot of opportunities to mentor students or, you know, just be an active member of your community, research community and, maybe apply for grants, you know, learn how that is done. So it’s also full of opportunity.

PETER: I am so happy to hear that you feel your postdoc is open for opportunity and that you’re doing all of those things like mentoring and doing some career development. I’m curious since you are from India, are there differences between the perception of a postdoc in India versus the perception of a postdoc in the US?

UPASANA: I would say in some ways, yes. So I actually did three years of research in India before I came here for a PhD. It’s a very different kind of research culture environment. One of the things, for example, it’s extreme, like it’s pretty hierarchical in a traditional way. So there are very, you know, invisible boundaries between being a student and a postdoc and a faculty member. Here I feel like, you know, as a postdoc, you kind of interact very differently with other postdocs, with faculty members, with students. In India, I felt like the interactions were kind of really set in in a much more hierarchical environment. It’s also kind of, in India, you know, at least in my experience, you know, resources are very different. Availability of resources are very different in India versus the US. So a lot of time is spent, you know, preparing for a postdoc differently, working through research very differently. You have to like really plan ahead because reagents take time to come, things are much more expensive. So the kind of, I feel stresses, or the kind of worries are kind of different in India than in the US.

OLAYA: Did you meet any postdocs while you were doing research in India?

UPASANA: Yeah, so I should point out. I actually have had a lot of privileges in that way. I’ve come from a family that has a lot of academics, both my parents have PhDs. So I was really in this bubble of academia without knowing it. And it definitely has made academia much more accessible. I have obviously many more examples in my life, in my circle of friends, family friends, and I didn’t really realize how much of a difference it makes until I, you know, before my PhD, it really makes a huge difference to have such access. It’s definitely a privilege and an advantage to have positive examples, positive role models, have access to information. So yeah, so I definitely did know a lot of postdocs. I knew about their experiences, very, very different experiences, but at least, you know, I had access to these stories and these experiences. And that really helped me, for sure.

PETER: Yeah. I think that’s a really good point. And I like the term you use of access ‘cause it really does come down to like, what access do you have, whether that’s to people, to information, to institutions opportunities. [UPASANA: Absolutely]. So in your current position, what’s a day in the life of your postdoc look like?

UPASANA: So usually my day starts with coffee, before that I don’t consider my day started. [PETER: <laugh> Good, good], get my brain cells caffeinated. And then basically, like I said, you know, postdoc is about an independent research career. So it’s usually, you know, I’m following up from something I tried, some experiments I tried the past day. I usually at the end of the day kind of write down what worked, what didn’t work, what I might want to do the next day. So in the morning I kind of go in, I go over things that I have done previously. I plan the kind of experiment I want to do in that day. I think about timing: when I want to start it, when do I wanna finish it? And usually my experiments take like a couple of hours anyway, so that takes up a big chunk of my day. And then there’s always like small administrative things to be done: orders for the lab, catching up with other postdocs in the lab talking about what they’re doing. And that’s kind of what a typical day is. Sometimes there’ll be talks and seminars that I want to attend. Sometimes there’ll be things that, you know, meetings of the postdoc society that we have. And that usually concludes my day, around 6:30.

OLAYA: You mentioned the postdoc society. I already know part of the answer to this because it’s how I met you. But could you tell us a little bit more about what you do there, what you have done, ‘cause you certainly have a lot going on outside of the lab.

UPASANA: Sure. Yeah. So like Olaya mentioned, we basically met through the postdoc society. So Columbia University has this volunteer-run organization. So it’s just postdocs across the university who have taken out time from their day to kind of do things for other postdocs. So we basically have different committees. I, for example, have worked most closely with this committee called “Research and Professional Development”. And basically this is a way, you know, it’s a group of people and we are really interested in kind of doing events and programs to help postdocs kind of figure out the direction of their career or how to kind of enable them to do what they might wanna do after a postdoc. So some of these things include doing workshops, we had a writing scientific writing kind of workshop. Sometimes it involves career panels. So for example, we did this series called “Careers beyond the postdoc”, which is just a way to highlight non-academic careers that you can do after your PhD and your postdoc. And there are so many options and we have like, you know, we just talked about access. We have very little access to these non-academic worlds being in academia, but there are so many options beyond the postdoc. So we try to invite speakers from different types of career paths and ask them about, you know, what their job is like, what do you like about it? What do you not like about it? Why should somebody go into this type of career field? And it’s just a way for postdocs to learn about other careers. It’s a way for postdocs to think about what they wanna do and even prepare for what they might wanna do. So we do a bunch of those kinds of events and yeah, it’s a great place, it’s a community amongst postdocs as well.

PETER: I mean, that sounds amazing and very glad you have that community around you, hopefully supporting you while you work to support them. It also sounds like it takes a fair amount of time and effort [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>] so do you have any free time and if so, what do you do in it?

UPASANA: Yeah, I am very protective of my free time.

OLAYA: As shown by doing a podcast during a weekend <all laugh>

UPASANA: Well, this is a fun thing I’m doing. [OLAYA: oh, thank you <laugh>] No, I definitely, yeah, I definitely make sure I have free time every day at the end of my day, as much as possible and on the weekends. And usually on a daily basis, I am also very protective of the time before dinner <laugh> so I really enjoy cooking, you know, watching something fun, you know, making a nice meal enjoying it with my partner. This is an important time for me and on weekends, you know, I like, doing things outdoors, when the weather is nice go camping or hiking and yeah… Eating out a lot.

OLAYA: Yay.

PETER: As a chemist, do you use any of those skills to inform your cooking at all?

UPASANA: Well, I would say that I can’t confidently call myself a chemist, I would say maybe biochemist, but I definitely think that a lot of the same skills in cooking, I enjoy, for example, I really working like working with my hands. So, you know, in experiments as part of why, you know, I enjoy doing experiments is like, you know, being very meticulous about what I’m doing in lab. And I really enjoy being meticulous in the kitchen as well. Sometimes too, the frustration of people I’m cooking with <all laugh>, but actually during COVID we used to do a lot of cook-alongs with friends and, you know, we just put the video on, decide on some recipe and just cook together. And I was definitely the slowest, but I think I was enjoying it the most.

PETER: And I’m sure your food was the best. They just [UPASANA: oh, thank you] cannot confirm nor deny. So it sounds like you are a fabulous and wonderful cook as well as a leader in the postdoc society and a biochemist by trade, [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>] could you tell us a little bit more about who you are?

UPASANA: Yeah, that’s a hard one. Who am I? I guess I am somebody who is excited about learning new things. I enjoy kind of the wonder in everyday things or, you know, around me in nature. I like being outdoors because there’s often really cool things to see. I guess I’m a person who likes, I don’t know, collaborative things, working together with people for some common purpose. I think that’s kind of why this postdoc society stuff is quite rewarding, but I guess paradoxically, I’m also kind of an introvert, so it’s a funny balance I have going on. Yeah. I guess I don’t have that many descriptions for myself. <laugh>

PETER: No, all of that sounds like they make for a wonderful researcher postdoc person.

OLAYA: She is, she is.

PETER: I love it.

UPASANA: Oh, thank you.

OLAYA: How do you find that all those intertwining pieces shape your experience as a postdoc?

UPASANA: I definitely think that it has played, for example, this whole sense of, you know, being excited to learn new things is definitely kind of the crux of why I wanted do a postdoc anyway. I do enjoy learning things discovering things and, uh, more than just doing your own research, I like, you know, in a postdoc you’re in an environment where you’re learning things, not just from the experiments you’re doing yourself, but from others around you. And I like that environment a lot. There’s always something to learn, you know, what the neighboring lab is doing, what your friend that you’re meeting is working on. So there’s always opportunity to learn new things that are cool and fun. So I really like that. I guess it has also kind of helped shape what I look for in my interactions as a postdoc. So, you know, I really value for example, people who are collaborative in their science, people who are, you know, at seminars or talks, asking questions because they wanna get to an answer or learn something and not just asking questions for, you know, sometimes it can be a toxic place. There are people who will ask questions just to bring someone else down. And it’s definitely shaped my relationships in the scientific community and in and around me is people who think like me and have priorities like me. I’ve definitely gravitated towards those scientific relationships, I think. So I feel like these things kind of have shaped the spaces that I occupy in my postdoc.

PETER: Thankfully it sounds like you’ve been able to do that successfully. You’ve joined the postdoc society. You seem to have some good collaborations going on [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>]. So can you tell us a little bit more about how you found your quote unquote community over at Columbia and like who are those people that you sought to build that community with?

UPASANA: Yeah, so typically I would say before my PhD, I think I would not have found these kinds of communities outside of my lab. But in my PhD, I had a very close friend, really smart, really generous, enterprising friend who decided she wanted to start an organization in our graduate school. And there, she volunteered me for an executive committee position [OLAYA: as you do], which I resented, yes, as you do, which I resented immediately, but kinda, you know, begrudgingly, I showed up and I was doing things. And it turned out to be the most, you know, one of the happiest experiences during my grad school, just meeting all these people who literally are volunteering their time to do stuff for others. And you know, it’s definitely very rewarding. You find people who are willing to share their experiences, kind of help you out. And so, that really taught me the value of looking for this type of community outside of your own individual work at your lab bench. And so when I came to Columbia, I saw that there’s this postdoc society, I showed up for some meetings and found same kind of like, you know, community of people thinking about, you know, what would other postdocs benefit from? What would they enjoy? You know, what would be helpful? And, you know, as you think about these things, you kind of, you know, bond over it in some way you kind of share common experience. So that’s how I met Olaya. You know, we worked for many years together, just amazing. And it’s a way of also inspiring each other. Like she has inspired me to do so many things. She’s just like you know, getting things done, you know, constantly thinking about what would be nice for others. And so I feel like, you know, even in a way when I was, you know, things weren’t going well in my own research, things weren’t working out, you know, being part of this community where everybody’s inspiring each other, you’re doing things, the sense of you feel kind of a reward, you know, when things get done, that’s been very valuable. So yeah, I found these other postdocs doing awesome things for others and, you know, it’s a great place to connect with others and, and do things together.

OLAYA: Thank you. Thank you for your words, Upasana. And I really enjoyed the time that we had together and I think [UPASANA: absolutely] Upasana is a real team player. And she also did a lot for CUPS, both as president [UPASANA: Um, oh, thank you] and in the career development committee, ‘cause those “Career beyond the postdoc”” events that she mentioned, she has a lot to do with that. So in this community, both the scientific and the sort of more social networky one with the postdoc society. Who is there? Do you find that it’s fairly homogeneous or have you found people from all across the board there?

UPASANA: I think they’re all across the board, to be honest. I do think that there are a lot of internationals. Personally, I found it nice because you know, you have a lot of shared experiences. So I definitely connected with a lot of other international postdocs through CUPS as well. But yeah, we have people from different departments, different stage of their postdocs as well. Usually I guess newer postdocs tend to come in to CUPS because they’re full of energy and excitement and…

OLAYA: And they don’t know people and it’s a great way of meeting people. I wouldn’t have met you. [UPASANA: That’s so true] if it weren’t for the postdoc society. [UPASANA: That’s so true]. And we literally worked in the same campus, like across the street.

UPASANA: Yep. Yep. That’s so true.

PETER: Mm-hmm <affirmative>

OLAYA: I don’t know for other universities, this is probably also true. Many campuses, the departments are fairly isolated.

UPASANA: Mm-hmm <affirmative>.

PETER: Right. Academia is nothing if not good at silos.

UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative> And also I feel like that’s particularly unique to postdocs because, you know, as a graduate student, you have your you’re doing classes with others. You already have a community that is through school, through graduate school. You know, I had friends in other departments just because you’re in the same classes together. So you really get to know a lot of people. But in a postdoc you’re basically in your lab, you don’t have a sense of community outside of that, unless there are these kinds of spaces. So I think it’s, it’s particularly true for postdocs compared to, for example, graduate students.

OLAYA: And that relates a lot to institutional support, which we’re gonna cover in the episode with Ericka Peterson, uh, who is a postdoc admin [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>] at Columbia as well. [UPASANA: Yeah] But I think it is very different. Grad school has a lot of institutional support, whereas the postdocs, depending on the institution, it can vary a lot. And so if you’re in an institution [UPASANA: Absolutely] which doesn’t have that structure, it can be really hard to meet other postdocs outside of your immediate environment. So I am really happy that you found that community and you’re definitely using it well [PETER: <laugh>].

UPASANA: No, I totally agree. Yeah.

OLAYA: So you’re clearly, you’re clearly doing fairly well as a postdoc, you seem enthusiastic about it, both with your science and [Upasna: mm-hmm ] advocacy. Why did you actually start a postdoc?

UPASANA: So I had, like I mentioned, I did, you know, research for a couple of years before I did a PhD, but that research experience was actually pretty bad. I was in a, kind of a pretty toxic environment. There was no joy in learning. It was, you know, it was just a bad experience overall, but, you know, because I had, you know, other, I had access to academia, like I said before, you know, I had, I knew other friends who were doing PhDs and I knew that there was a better model for doing research than just what I had experienced. So I decided to apply for a PhD. Thankfully, that was a really fantastic experience. I had a really great advisor. I had this really nice department environment. It was just really good experience. And so I really found the time to unlearn all the terrible things about my research experience and finally started to enjoy research during that time. Yeah. And I felt like I wasn’t done with research. I wanted to do a few more years of it because I thought, you know, I was, I was enjoying it. And so I decided to apply for postdocs, because this is a time where you can kind of like do your own research, make your own decisions, drive it forward. And so I kind of wanna do that even though I wasn’t really thinking about a faculty position necessarily afterwards, I was just more motivated to a postdoc because I wanted do research for a few more years, at least.

OLAYA: Cool.

PETER: I think that’s a great reason to do a postdoc, for sure. Given your experience, especially including your advocacy work and the community you’ve built, would you do it again?

UPASANA: Yes, I think so. I think so. I, I do feel like, you know, a postdoc is never easy. You know, you can never tell whether things are gonna work out in terms of your research, but I have been fortunate enough to have good experience and I would do it again.

PETER: Nice. Any specific highlights that you want to share with us that really made this time of your research career stand out?

UPASANA: I think the satisfaction of asking questions in your research, answering them and having things work out that’s that’s of course, really, really satisfying, but what I do enjoy a lot about research and being in a research environment is being able to talk to other people about research. So the highlights, I would say of my postdoc are mostly giving talks about my work, because that’s a great way to have people ask questions, to engage with people, really drive home what’s really interesting about this… And it’s also a great way to like connect with other of postdocs, ask about their research. So to me, I think all my highlights have been kind of talks, presentations, posters, where I get to talk at a very individual level with others about my science. I think that I, I really enjoy that.

OLAYA: More specifically, maybe skill wise, what would you say you’ve learned during your postdoc? When you’re done with your postdoc, what will be the skills that you will say “I learned that during my postdoc”?

UPASANA: Yeah, that’s a great question. One thing I learned is advocating for myself because, you know, I mean, when you’re thrown into a postdoc, after being a graduate student where you really have, you know, people assigned to be invested in your progress and invested in your success. You’re kind of on your own a bit during a postdoc in some ways, you don’t have a thesis committee, for example, checking in on you and so on and so forth. So I feel like one of the things is thinking more independently about where I wanna go either in my own research, as well as outside of research in my career. And just trying to be a better advocate for myself, asking for things that I need, which is always very uncomfortable. I think I kind of did that. And I would say also just having the confidence in doing new things. I think that before, it’s definitely been a confidence-building exercise overall, you know, doing things with postdoc society, as well as in my research.

PETER: In many ways, and I’m very happy hear this, it sounds like you’ve had an exceptionally great experience as a postdoc. Do you have any challenges that you’d be willing to share with the audience?

UPASANA: I mean, I know I make it sound like I have, I’ve had the best postdoc experience that is to have. But I also think that has a lot to do with kind of setting expectations of what I am happy with and what I want. So for example, I am not the most productive postdoc in my lab by far, if you were to go by, you know, metrics of publications and such, and of course you, you’re always feeling a little bit insecure, you know, when you know, what is the right amount of productivity, for example, and I, and I had mentioned that, and I’m very productive of my free time. You know, you sometimes you have to question that. So those are always kind of, I think it’s a part of being in research is there is no obvious, you know, set of expectations from you. So you have to set the expectations and that’s always challenging because you can always have second thoughts and question, whether, you know, you could be doing more or whether, can you get more out of this? So I guess the insecurity is sometimes, you know, you have to reason with it, and that’s always challenging. And also not just in my postdoc, I guess throughout all these years, being in research and academic environments, you know, you always encounter toxic behaviors and environments, and it’s always a struggle interacting with these kinds of behaviors, but, you know, as long as you have a more healthy, positive set of relationships, you know, it’s easier to get through those, but I think that’s also kind of a challenge that you have to deal with while trying to be productive, while trying to, you know, do your job.

PETER: Right.

OLAYA: Yeah, sort of related to this… You’ve mentioned repeatedly that you like the independence and like being in control of your science and all that [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>], but there’s always the eternal question of how much guidance and support the postdocs should have. ‘Cause like officially this is still sort of a training position [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>] so yes, you’re training to be an independent researcher, but how do you feel that interacts with like the support versus independence, and how do you navigate that? Do you have any career development support in the lab, for example?

UPASANA: So, yes. So, as far as career development support is, so I would say one of the things I was looking for when I was looking for postdoc is I knew going in that I may be enjoying research and I want, want to do research for a few more years, but ultimately I don’t want to stay in academia. Most likely, I don’t want a faculty position. And so during my postdoc interviews, I was kinda open and clear about it. In some cases, you know, person who’s interviewing me did not receive it well, but thankfully in my current postdoc, my PI is very open and receptive to any career that I want. And usually the thing with this, like I said, advocating for myself because I’m interested in non-academic careers, it’s hard to find that within my lab and within academia, but if there is something that I need, I’m able to ask for it and get it. And so I really appreciate that. But again, that has kind of taught me to ask for things that I would normally be, you know, uncomfortable, but in terms of, you know, how much support versus independence you wanna get out of a postdoc I also think it’s a lot of, it has to be a matching game. So this is something that I was kind of looking forward to when I was interviewing for postdoc positions is I had thought about what are the things that I want most of sometimes, you know, but especially if you’re changing fields a lot, maybe you need some more support. So that’s something to look for in a postdoc lab. In my case, I had talked to all the students in postdocs who were there in the lab and, you know, they were very open to like kind of showing me how to do things and having that support system. So I guess it, how much support versus independence, is something to ask yourself when going into a postdoc and seeking that out rather than it being a definite being the same for everybody, for example.

PETER: Yeah, I think you’ve raised a really good point about expectations and maybe even communication with your PI [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>] in terms of what it is that you are hoping to get out of your postdoctoral experience. And if they’re not okay with you considering careers outside of academia, then you might want to think this won’t be a good match. [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>] and that’s okay. <laugh>.

OLAYA: Yeah, I love that you talked about communication. This has definitely come up with other people and I’m so happy to hear people talk about this, ‘cause I do feel postdocs coming in and current postdocs really need to advocate for themselves. So you mentioned interviewing with different PIs and talking about your goals, how did you eventually pick the lab where you’re doing your postdoc?

UPASANA: Yeah, so actually when I was finishing up my PhD, I knew that I had enjoyed research. I wanted to do it for a few more years, but I had also kind of heard from people that if you don’t wanna stay in academia, then you know, you could think about other options. So I was really forced to think about if I do a postdoc, who am I doing it with? And this particular lab that I’m currently in, I basically heard a talk from the PI one of the conferences. I really enjoyed seeing that. And I thought that if I’m going to be doing research for just a few more years and then move out of it, I wanna do something that I, where the work is motivating me enough to get me through. So we basically watch molecules work in real time using, you know, microscopy methods and this and that. So, you know, we study how DNA gets repaired and this lab had a very cool method of basically watching this happen in real time. And I just thought that was really fascinating. And I thought I would really like to do this for a couple of years [PETER: <laugh>] and that was the first thought going in. But obviously during the postdoc experience, I mean the interviewing experience, you have talked to the PI again, make sure that they’re okay being open about the fact that, you know, what you plan after your postdoc, how long you want it to be, talk to the students and postdocs currently in the lab, see what the environment is like. So even though the science was the thing that attracted me to the lab, I obviously had to consider all the other things about what the experience would be like.

PETER: So it sounds like you were already considering doing a postdoc when you met who is now your current PI at this conference. When did you start that process of exploring different labs for doing a postdoc in?

UPASANA: I would say, well, I’ve heard from a lot of people that they started thinking about it much earlier than I did. So I don’t know whether my experience is representative, but I basically started applying maybe six to eight months before I was going to finish up. So it was a fairly last-minute compared to I think, other postdocs around me. But I think towards the end of my PhD, when I was really writing up my thesis, finishing up on my experiments and I had to like, think about what I want to do next. That’s also, when I went to this conference, this was in the, towards the end of my PhD, and that’s kind of what gave me ideas to apply to these different labs. So yeah, I would say maybe in the last year of my PhD, I started thinking about whether I enjoyed this research process enough to do a few more years of it. And that’s when I started thinking about applying to postdocs and which labs to apply to

PETER: Well thought out, it sounds.

OLAYA: Oh, now it does! At the time, it did not feel very well thought out. [ALL: <laugh>]

OLAYA: Do you have a plan to like phase out the postdoc?

UPASANA: Yeah, I think I would probably wanna wrap up maybe in the next year. The problem is because you know in research there’s never a clear end point. There’s always more things you can do, more things you can try. So it’s really hard to extricate yourself from it. But, it’s funny, I went to a conference recently and there, when you’re a fourth-year postdoc, you know, the questions start coming up, you know, when are you gonna be on the job market? What are you doing? And that definitely precipitated some more thought about it. But I think maybe in the next year…

PETER: I’ve never had a PI ask me, when I’m on the job market. [ALL: <laugh>] They’ve never wanted me that badly. [ALL: <laugh>]

UPASANA: No, this is actually funny. It was another postdoc, for example, who was asking me. So, you know, so I give a short talk at this conference and afterwards I’m talking to all these other people, and there’s another postdoc and she asked me, oh, you know, when will you be on the faculty job market? And then I had to gently say, I am not on the faculty job market. And that was very perplexing to her. She, you know, she couldn’t, it was like, you know, why are you at a conference if you don’t wanna stay in academia?

OLAYA: I mean, it’s the science equivalent of the 30-something, “oh, so when are you guys gonna get married?”

UPASANA: Yeah, exactly. That’s exactly what it is. [PETER: Mm-hmm <affirmative>] And so, you know, I had to really push back against this idea that, you know, the only reason, the only people who should be at a conference are people who wanna stay in academia. And I had to think about, yeah…

OLAYA: No, you deserve to be there. So you’ve been very clear about not wanting to be a PI and you’ve clearly worked a lot in career development. So, have you learned about careers that potentially interest you? Have you already started exploring any of those?

UPASANA: Yeah. Well, I guess I don’t have single simple answer for, you know, this is the title of the position I want.

OLAYA: Which is great.

UPASANA: Yeah. Which definitely keeps options open <laugh>. But I guess what I have thought more about is what kind of things I want to do on a day-to-day basis, no matter what, what the career is. So just hearing from people in different careers, you know, you get a sense for what takes up most of their time. And I think I would like to be in a career where I’m constantly learning about new research and, you know, talking to scientists, but not really doing experiments on a day-to-day basis. Some of these for example, would include, you know, being an editor at a scientific journal or, you know, a lot of grant giving agencies, NIH, or, you know, private foundations, Simons Foundation, for example, they have scientific officers who basically are going over grants and talking to scientists and figuring out what research is important. You know, those kinds of things where you’re still kind of reading new research and you’re reading more widely. So you’re not super specialized on one protein in one pathway. So you’re really still learning every day on the job, but I guess more widely on a day-to-day basis, something like that.

OLAYA: So I’m just gonna steal a question from a friend of mine, that I got asked before I left academia for a non-research job, which is aren’t you gonna miss it? [PETER: <laugh>]

OLAYA: So I guess I will miss it, but, but I think if I make kind of a very intentional choice, knowing that, you know, I’m choosing this other life over, you know, research, you know, day-to-day experimental research, hopefully I won’t be filled with regret every day. <laugh> You know, of course, you know, we always have to choose some things over the other, you know, in terms of our career choices, you know, you’ll always leave things behind that you might miss and then do things that hopefully make up for it. So I guess as long as, you know, you are intentional and you know what you’re giving up for, what other reward, hopefully, you know, you won’t feel totally terrible about life decisions.

OLAYA: <laugh>

PETER: And I think you make a good point saying that with every career, there is probably some part of your personality that might not be fulfilling or be fulfilled by that career. But if that career exists, that fulfills every part of who I am. One: somebody please tell me about this.

OLAYA: <laughs>

UPASANA: Exactly, exactly.

PETER: And two: maybe I’m just a really like unexciting person. I don’t know.

UPASANA: Insatiable.

OLAYA: Yeah, no, but also, and I had this conversation with my former PI ‘cause the point they were making was kind of like, oh, but you like so many things, you will need to find this, very perfect job that checks all the boxes. And I actually think this is not true. Like you can have a fulfilling job, something you’d really enjoy doing. And then you have your free time to do all these other things that make you whole as a person and they don’t necessarily have to be related to your work. [UPASANA: Absolutely.] Yeah. I would say don’t sweat it, as long as you like your job and it’s something that is worth it for you at the time. Go for it.

UPASANA: Thank you. I appreciate that. I feel very fortunate. Yeah, I think, I think I’m in a good place. Mm-hmm <affirmative>

PETER: And I think that also speaks very directly to this. From my experience, I don’t wanna speak for all PIs out there and all of academia, but from my experience, seeing the PIs that I’ve had, their life is their work [UPASANA: mm-hmm <affirmative>] and that is the level of dedication that they have. And that’s fantastic. [UPASANA: Mm-hmm <affirmative>] but I also know that sometimes it doesn’t leave as much time as they would like for other interests and other opportunities that they would otherwise be able to explore. And I’m not saying that’s the wrong way to approach it. [UPASANA: Mm-hmm <affirmative>] I’m just saying that if that is who you are [UPASANA: right] in your research and career, it can be hard for you to think, why would someone not want to do it like this? Because I love research so much. It is my life.

OLAYA: Yeah. And I think Upasana you are such a great example because a lot of people, I think, feel like postdocs who don’t pursue an academic career are… It’s either because they’re not passionate enough about their science or not good enough. [UPASANA: Mm-hmm <affirmative>] and I feel like you completely debunked that, ‘cause you’re clearly great. You’re giving short talks <laugh> as a fourth-year postdoc and you are a successful scientist and still you just made the rational decision of not staying in academia and this is completely valid. [UPASANA: Yep]. So I’m happy that you’re here sharing your story.

UPASANA: <laugh> No, thank you so much. Yeah, I really, really feel like, you know, this whole idea that the only way to show to really enjoy research is to spend your whole life as a faculty member. I think, you know, there is so many ways to interact with research, to enjoy research, to talk about, you know, science, which is my field that, you know, if you want to do research, if you want to enjoy it for a few years, doing a postdoc that’s totally fine, but it definitely doesn’t obligate you, your love for research does not obligate you to, you know, only enjoy it in the role of faculty member. I think we, and I don’t remember the stats on it, but you know, most postdocs will not, who might wanna stay in academia will not always get that opportunity. And you know, to kind of set up this system where that’s the benchmark for being successful in science, I think does harm, you know, people’s experience of what otherwise is a very, you know, exciting phase of your career.

PETER: And it’s a very narrow idea of what research is, if the only way to enjoy it is by being in a lab, in an academic institution.

UPASANA: Absolutely.

OLAYA: Yeah. Yeah.

PETER: I’m now on my soapbox as of often.

PETER: Upasana, thank you so much for joining us on this. And before we let you go, we have one final question: [UPASANA: Mm-hmm <affirmative>] Do you have any advice to listeners out there who might be considering a postdoc or a career change?

UPASANA: Yeah, I think that maybe, you know, what worked really well for me in making these choices is really thinking about, if you’re thinking about a postdoc, think about why you wanna do it to be very, very intentional about it. I don’t think that a postdoc should be a default in your, in a career. So I would say that, you know, if you’re choosing it, don’t only think about what you’ll be doing in your postdoc, but also think about how it would affect the rest of your life, whether it’s important for you, what other things are important to you in your life and how this would impact just your quality of life overall and not just think of it as just a job because it does bleed into our lives and our whole experience. So yeah, I would say, just think about what you enjoy, what you’re looking for, what you’re willing to give up on, what is extremely important and non-negotiable for you. And if all of these things work out for you in a postdoc then, yeah, go for it.
